Eversheds LLP

Michael heads Eversheds waste practice.  Over the last decade the management of municipal waste in the United Kingdom has been transformed by increased recycling and the use of energy from waste to divert waste from landfill. Michael has 18 years’ experience and his team has worked on over 70 waste projects of all types and sizes. These have included generating electricity using energy from waste, creating and using refuse derived fuel, anaerobic digestion of food waste and factory waste, mechanical biological separation projects, waste reduction schemes, reuse schemes, recycling and landfill. He has also worked on district heating schemes and energy from waste plants with private wire offtakes to chemical works together with steam off take arrangements.

He acted for Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority on Europe’s largest waste scheme managing 1.1 million tonnes of municipal waste per year with a contract value around US$5 billion including many other projects with contract values exceeding US$1 billion.

Michael regularly lectures on topical waste issues and has been a regular speaker at conferences and workshops and is a member of the International Solid Waste Association. He is a recommended individual in the independent guide on lawyers called Chambers Guide, the 2008 edition of which said Michael Grimes is the firm’s “waste guru”. He has “extensive knowledge of all aspects of waste procurement”. The 2015 version of Chambers Guide states that he is “amazing with clients and especially superb with waste”.
